Gastric Ulcers

Debilitating and all too common in the modern sporthorse, equine gastric ulcers are painful lesions that form on the lining of the horse's stomach.

Type of Ulcer

Squamous

These ulcers appear in the upper portion of the horse’s stomach. This area lacks the protective mucus found in the lower portion which makes it susceptible to acid damage. These ulcers are usually associated with factors such as stress, training and feeding practice. These type of ulcers usually take 3-4 weeks to heal.

Suggested Treatment: Omeprazole for 28 days.

Glandular

These ulcers appear on the lower portion of the horse’s stomach and can be caused by bacterial infections, certain medications (including ‘bute’) and other underlying health conditions.

This portion of the stomach contains gastric glands that produce mucus to protect the horse’s stomach. These ulcers usually take 7-8 weeks to resolve.

Suggested Treatment: Combination of Omeprazole & Sucralfate for 28 days.

Pyloric

These ulcers are found in the pylorus, which is the muscular area at the lower end of the horse’s stomach that connects to the small intestine.

The exact causes and mechanisms of pyloric ulcers are not yet fully understood. There is limited research that suggests pyloric ulcers are associated with factors such as excessive stomach acid, changes to gastric motility, disruption of the function of the pylorus or as a side effect of certain medications.

Suggested Treatment: Combination of Omeprazole & Sucralfate for 28 days.

Sucralfate

Sucralfate works by binding to the surface of ulcers and forms a temporary, protective coating. This ensures the ulcer site is not further inflamed and allows the healing process to commence more quickly than it would from acid reduction measures alone.

Hindgut Ulcers

Hindgut ulcers in horses refers to ulcers that develop in the large intestine and cecum of horses. Unlike gastric ulcers that occur in the stomach, hindgut ulcers specifically affect the hindgut region of the digestive system.

Type

Right dorsal colitis

Right dorsal colitis is a specific type of ulcerative disease in horses localized to the right, upper region of the large intestine. is typically represented by reduced appetite, colic, diarrhea, and dehydration.

Hindgut Acidosis

This occurs when raised acidity in the hindgut reduces mucous production, which leaves the mucous membranes of the hindgut vulnerable to ulceration.
