What is Omeprazole Horse Medication?

Horses are natural grazers 24/7. The stomach of a horse is lined with many many acid-producing proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The PPI's generate acid 24/7. In one day a horse can produce 16 gallons (60L) of acid.

These pumps’ are a continuous actions, resulting in a build up of acid which forms a stomach ulcer in 3-5days.

Enteric coating of the omeprazole allows it to work by moving through the acidic environment of the horse’s stomach into the small intestine.

Omeprazole is effective for 24 hours, allowing the stomach sufficient time to heal itself. A treatment regime of 28 days will heal the ulcer, and with the chance of re-occurrence being very high, a prevention regime is highly recommended to avoid a flare up of new ulcers.
