Using NSAIDs such as phenylbutazone is common practice in the equine industry. Most horses can just tolerate taking these drugs at doses that are normally prescribed by the veterinarian. However, some horses can develop digestive ulcers when taking NSAIDs -even if the dose is reduced to half of the normal dose. If for instance, an NSAID is necessary, ketoprofen is less likely to produce ulcers compared to phenylbutazone. But if phenylbutazone is the best NSAID to use, consider lowering the dose for your horse.
Using several NSAIDs at one time is not recommended. There are other methods that you can use to ease the pain your horse might be feeling. You might wish to consider chiropractic care or massage treatments to soothe bone and muscle pain in your horse.
